RIDOT Seeks Money For I-95 North Viaduct Project

(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is seeking to borrow money for the Interstate 95 viaduct project in downtown Providence. The request is for 200-million dollars for the reconstruction and widening of I-95 north to finish the job started when the state rebuilt the southbound viaduct several years ago.Bills were filed at the State House last month to authorize bonds that would be repaid with future federal transportation dollars, according to a RIDOT memo.A spokesperson for the Department of Administration told The Providence Journal that the borrowing is not included in Governor Gina Raimondo's budget proposal because the state hoped to get financing approved sooner, but House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello tells the Journal that this is a budget item, and there will be no fast-tracking.
