New Laws Affect Hospitals, Elderly And Disabled, Coventry Sewer System

(Providence, RI)--New laws are being signed this week by Governor Raimondo. One bill, introduced as a response to the St. Joseph Health Services pension system crisis, mandates stronger oversight for hospitals being acquired by non-profit agencies. Two other bills help the elderly and disabled: one requires a national criminal background check for people seeking any kind of guardianship for another adult, and another says spouses or partners of patients in Alzheimer's or dementia special care units or programs can live with them, even if they aren't patients themselves. And, a bill from Coventry Senator Leo Raptakis and Representative Patricia Serpa caps the interest rates charged by the town to ratepayers for the town's sewer project.
