RI Seeks Bids For Safe Injection Sites

Rhode Island is moving forward with a plan for supervised drug injection sites.

Governor Dan McKee authorized the two-year pilot program in 2021. The state opened up the bidding process for companies to submit proposals on Wednesday.

The acting secretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services said the expectation is that the injection centers will be located in hot spots for drug usage.

Companies are being asked to submit proposals by December 2nd.

The concept of a Safe Injection Site was actually born in The Netherlands in the 1970's.

The are prominent in Europe while in this country Denver began a program in 2018.

Many communities are considering some version of the concept throughout the nation.
